Photo Essay: An Old Japanese Graveyard

Yesterday, we went walking up a wooded hill near our house to see what was there. It turned out that it was an old Japanese graveyard. While some of the graves were quite new, others looked like they were perhaps hundreds of years old.

This last photo is not of headstones, but of statues of the Jizo Bodhisattva. It is perhaps best to think of these statues as Buddhist memorials for infants who have passed away.
